Science Outside the University

Webinar Event

Do scientists need universities?

Scientists have commonly gravitated to universities because universities maintain a virtual monopoly on the necessary infrastructure to do science: laboratories, students, equipment, and instrumentation. In an increasingly networked and distributed world, however, that monopoly is fraying.

Companies like Emerald Cloud Lab may be the future of scientific endeavors independent of universities. Emerald Cloud Lab describes itself as the “only remotely operated research facility that handles all aspects of daily lab work — method design, materials logistics, sample preparation, instrument operation, data acquisition and analysis, troubleshooting, waste disposal, and everything in between — without the user ever setting foot in the lab.” Not only can scientists at small, modestly-funded colleges now have access to world-class instrumentation, scientists need not even be affiliated with a college at all.

Join the National Association of Scholars on Friday, September 1, at 3 pm ET to discuss "Restoring the Sciences: Science Outside the University."

This event will feature Brian Frezza, co-founder and co-CEO of Emerald Cloud Labs. Scott Turner will moderate the discussion.
