About the report
For the past eleven years, the National Association of Scholars has surveyed what books colleges and universities assign as common reading—often a summer reading selection for incoming freshmen. For many students, this is the only book they will read in common with all their classmates.
For the first time, NAS has collected eleven years of data and compiled it into a comprehensive study of common reading programs. In our seventh report, our findings continue to be a cause for concern: schools seldom assign classic texts, integrate common readings into activist studies, and the books they do assign are contemporary, juvenile, and overwhelmingly progressive.
About the keynote
John Tierney is a contributing editor to the Manhattan Institute's quarterly publication, City Journal. Tierney has significant experience in print and media, recently joining City Journal after more than two decades as a reporter and columnist with the New York Times.
