Oregon Moves Toward "Inclusive" Curriculum

Glenn Ricketts

“Inclusive” education in American history, proposed in House Bill 2023, is currently under consideration by the Oregon legislature senate education committee.  If enacted, the measure would make identity politics mandatory for the state’s public schools at all levels, which would need to “include” designated groups in the history curriculum.  Oregon affiliate president Bruce Gilley examined the implications of the new law in a recent op-ed in the Oregonianhttps://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/2019/05/opinion-teaching-history-by-political-checklist.html

The OAS also submitted the following document to the Senate education committee, opposing the measure for its “politicization of history education” in Oregon: https://www.oregonscholars.org/wp-content/uploads/OASStatementonHB2023-2019.pdf

“Inclusive” education initiatives are currently pending in a number of states, following the lead of California.  Thanks to the efforts of Bruce Gilley and the OAS, it won’t slip in unnoticed in Oregon.
