New NAS Affiliate in Arkansas

Sandra Stotsky

The National Association of Scholars is proud to announce the inception of a new affiliate for the state of Arkansas. Sandra Stotsky, professor of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, is the president of the new chapter; Cheri Pierson Yecke, Dean of Graduate Programs at Harding University, is the secretary/treasurer.

Ms. Stotsky, who authored the book Our Language: How Multicultural Classroom Instruction Is Undermining Our Children's Ability to Read, Write, and Reason, made these comments about the Arkansas affiliate’s launch:

We are pleased to found the Arkansas chapter at the very time that the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville has a committee formed to examine core requirements and to suggest revisions. The speaker for our first meeting, to be held on Sunday, December 7, will be Professor David Joliffe of the English department and holder of the Brown chair in English literacy. He has been appointed to chair this committee, which is just beginning the three years it has been given to conduct its examination and make recommendations, and he will tell us how it plans to proceed.

Arkansas is the 46th U.S. state to house an NAS affiliate. We look forward to forming branches in Montana, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming. In the meantime, we are excited to add Arkansas to our ranks and we foresee a fruitful partnership there.
