Freeman Hrabowski's Approach to Higher Ed

George Leef

Here is the "60 Minutes" segment on University of Maryland Baltimore County president Freeman Hrabowski. I am not sure he's right that the U.S. needs to have a lot more math and science graduates, but I certainly wish that his no-nonsense, high expectations approach to higher education could be replicated at many other colleges and universities. The reason why it can't be is that far too many students want college to be easy and entertaining and far too many professors would rather do other things than spend time working with their students. UMBC looks like an oasis of excellence in a sea of mediocrity.
