Equal Opportunity and Social Justice

Tessa Carter

PolicyMic.com, a millenial-run news site, recently posted an opening for a viral content & social justice intern. PolicyMic's mission is "to engage smart young thinkers in thoughtful discussions around current events," and they are "expanding to provide the best platform possible for our community of passionate thinkers." The ideal candidate, the post says, would be fluent in social media, a hard worker, detailed and organized, passionate about social change, and someone who writes well and under pressure. Such an intern would help "create compelling stories that will have an impact on the world."

At the end of the internship notice, though, there is this strange inscription:

Women, people of color, and LGBT candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. PolicyMic is an equal-opportunity employer.

It would seem that some candidates are less impactful than others.
